On June 28th, military officials announced that the Cheyenne Mountain Complex would be deactivated.
This massive bunker and operations center has gained a great deal of notoriety from its appearances in television and movies, most notably as the setting of the Stargate SG-1 TV series.
But it also marks a major shift in military thinking away from Cold War paranoia over Soviet missile strikes, and the technological and monetary difficulties involved in upgrading a 40-year-old military base built under 1,000 feet of rock.
