Full Version: Paint It Black vs. Proud Mary

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and theyre all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens evry day

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then Ill fade away and not have to face the facts
Its not easy facin up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

Left a good job in the city,
Workin' for The Man every night and day,
And I never lost one minute of sleepin',
Worryin' 'bout the way things might have been.

Big wheel keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis,
Cut a lot of cane down in New Orleans,
But I never saw the good side of the city,
'Til I hitched a ride on a river boat queen.

Big wheel keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

If you come down to the river,
Bet you gonna find some people who live.
You don't have to worry though you have no money,
People on the river are happy to give.

Big wheel keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

Ah, geez, you've done it to me again... Put two of my favourite songs head to head in the first round... I guess that just goes to show the strength of the field...

I guess I'll have to take Paint It Black, because it is my favourite Rolling Stones song, and although I do enjoy Proud Mary (an excellent "sing along in the car" song), there are two reasons it isn't getting the vote.
a1 - There are other Creedence songs I like better (The Midnight Special comes to mind).
b2 - Tina Turner's version is better. I like the rock she lays down on Proud Mary...

I love the guitar work on "Paint it Black."

Oh, I strongly disagree here. Can't stand Turner's version. In fact, for me, this is a battle of the songs with inferior covers. (Both of which were in the Covers battle, incidentally).

I'm voting for Proud Mary, but if Paint It Black wins, that's quite all right as well.

Who was the philistine who covered Paint It Black?

Vanessa Carlton. It should be noted several Hallsians like that version, I'm just a dissenting voice on it.

One of the few Stones songs I like, it will get my vote. But maybe one this once.

I'm one of them, want to fight about it?

I like Paint It Black more, but I think Proud Mary is the better song.

How's that for wishy-washy?
