This is our official Halloween Party thread, where you can clown around in costume, post your trick-or-treating hauls, and get up to whatever mayhem comes to mind. It'll be up all day, and on into the night,

Well, with that... auspicious... opening, I hereby declare it Hump Day Rush Time!
This week's topic, naturally is all about Halloween: What costumes have you worn, what's the best you've seen, what's the worst you've seen, fond traditions, good candy, and all that jazz.

Well, my mom's party was a big bust but now she's off to a bonfire with some fellow witches. She should have more fun there. As for me, I'm left home alone going through the leftover trick-or-treat candy. Hm, I wonder if the dog likes Starbursts.
Hey, who's that up there next to Satin, dressed as Captain America?

Like Twinky, I'm at home this evening. Dad's going in to town to see my nephew, I'm staying here just in the minuscule chance we get trick-or-treaters and/or vandals. Haven't ever gotten vandals, haven't gotten trick-or-treaters in more than ten years, but just in case....
But as a bonus, there's a great big tub of candy that will probably still be completely around at the end of the evening.
The zombies are pretty uppity this year. And apparently I'm a magnet for vampire chicks.
...Which really isn't all that different from real life.

I took my son out trick-or-treating tonight. He dressed as a gecko hunter, because his favorite animals are lizards, specifically geckos (which he pronounces as "geicos," like the insurance company...damn TV).
Apparently, a gecko hunter dresses all in green and carries a butterfly net filled with soft, stuffed lizards.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I get a kick out of kids coming up with their own concepts instead of just wearing a store-standard costume.

I remember that most of my costumes when I was a kid weren't store bought. Although I also distinctly remember having a store bought Gizmo (from Gremlins) costume; one of those plastic smocks with the name on the front.

Had a couple of those... one of the devil, and one of Oscar the Grouch (which was actually pretty good for a "name on front" one, because the smock was of his can, and it had the name as a sign hanging off the top.) Other than that, I remember being a snow leopard one year (and wore the costume Mom made me as pajamas afterwards), and I think a vampire one year. Don't really remember many other times.
Although I remember my sister going as a wave one year. Little sister was always rather avant garde.

I'm diggin' the Geico Hunter... Even Steve Irwin had to start somwhere...
As to Halloween, well, Down Under we don't really celebrate it, as such. It's starting to be pushed a bit by some of the stores, but until it is truly commercially accepted it won't take off. Still, we've had the odd trick-or-treater in the past. Nothing this year though, and we have both a high school and a primary school on the street at the end of ours.
Best costume I have ever had for Halloween is easy. I was the infamous "Toilet Paper Mummy", circa age 6 (We had an American librarian in on a study program and she organised a whole halloween thing). You know the one... You have to shamble along because if you move too fast the paper will break... You can't sit down, bend anywhere or do much of anything, but it's worth it, because no-one else is a mummy...

I was Dracula several years in a row after my mom made me a big cape out of felt. One of my favorite costumes was from when I was in college and dressed as the Devil. I put together a suit with a red dress shirt and a black tie, and found a pentagram tie pin and some rubber horns at a costume shop. It was simple and elegant and I thought it kicked ass.

Home grown Satan Costumes are easily the best. Had a friend at Uni who got hold of a burgundy smoking jacket and wore that with black dress pants and a black silk shirt, then used gel to set some of his hair into horn shapes which we then sprayed red for a subtle horn effect. To top it off he stood around all evening with a cigar in one hand and a glass of port in the other. Classy...

Sounds like it kicked ass, all right. Home-made devil costumes really are better than the stereotypical ones you find at the store.

The Halloween costumes I can remember were: The Frankenstein Monster (wore an old sports jacket, heavy boots and made a paper mache head. ) That costume actually was pretty good. I didn't mind using it two years in a row and might have tried for a third but the paper mache head no longer fit me so... The other one I remember was a home made costume for a super hero character I created myself. That one was ok. It was made out of leotards with two colors sewn together. The real problem with it was the mask was too loose so it looked like an executioner's hood more than the tight fitting mask that it needed to be. The other problem was no one knew who I was dressing up as so I had to keep telling people "I'm Xor, a super hero I created myself" and that got tiresome. That and the costume didn't work even remotely well for Fall in Canada. That leotard was too thin to wear in below zero temperatures and it couldn't fit over winter clothes. So I either just worse the mask and winter clothes (which really didn't work) or I dropped the costume entirely and went as a burglar (winter coat and mask) when I did the trick or treating and only wore super hero costume during the day at Elementary school. The Frankenstein Monster costume worked with a winter jacket so it was a much better costume.
My best friend in Elementary School had an awesome costume one year. He and his brother dressed as Batman and Robin and these were great home made costumes. Looked really accurate (in that 1960's tv series way). I remember we put those costumes on every so often to play Batman and Robin when it wasn't Halloween for the next few years, until they no longer fit.
