I'm gonna go out on limb here and say 'this is going to be a good movie'. I actually decided this would be a good movie when I saw Snake Eyes a few weeks ago. I know I have no reason to think this will be a good movie simply because I like a couple pictures they revealed. I guess I'm just being optimistic.

You know, they could have added a little color to her costume. If you put every character in black, tight fitting gear, Snake Eyes kind of blends in with everybody, instead of standing out like he should.
...and yes, I'm aware of the irony of wanting a ninja to stand out.

Hey, if they want him to stand out, maybe his ninja costume could be white...
Oh...
Yeah...

Ehh, I'm really not feeling this movie. I just don't like all the black leather bodysuits; really the only two characters that look right are Snake Eyes and the Baroness, two characters that are supposed to wear all black outfits. And Destro doesn't have his helmet, his most distinguishing feature? I realize this is just one promotional picture, but you would think that if he was going to wear it in the movie, they would include it in the image to get the fans psyched up.
I'm also not sure why in most of the modern incarnations of G.I. Joe, there is less of an emphasis on Roadblock and more of an emphasis on Heavy Duty, not just with the movie, but also in the recent "Sigma Six" cartoon and several recent toylines. Heavy Duty is a pale imitation of Roadblock (okay, technically he's supposed to be Roadblock's cousin, but they're basically the same character).
TwinkyMaster
May 7 2008, 08:46 PM

And gave him my herpes.

Don't know much of anything about Heavy Duty/Roadblock but as for Destro, I was really hoping to see how his mask was gonna look. It's really just the actor in a suit, not even a costume. Baroness and Snake Eyes look cool but I'm also not too thrilled by any of the others.
Still, I went to see Transformers even without being a huge fan of it so I'll probably go to see this also.

Which one was Joe?
Doom-OH - PHD
Feb 3 2009, 09:25 PM
WELL.
As originally concieved, GI Joe was ment to suggest that the men depicted in the toys were "Joes" which in the late 40s early 50s was a slang term meant to indicate regular guys. As in "Average Joe" and they were "GI"s, or "Goverment Issue" which was a slang term for soldiers, as all the stuff that they had was listed as Goverment Issue uniforms, GI rifle, GI ration etc...
thus an implication of "average citizen soldier" who, when asked to, rises above their station to satisfy the calling of their duty...
granted since the gen1 animated the creators have made a concious effort to move from that idea to almost the exact opposite of that when presenting characters who are entirely exceptional and much larger than life...
So to answer your question Gelf, conceptually they are ALL Joe.... but actually none of them are.

If anyone is interested here is a link to The Internet Move Database that lists whos playing who in the film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1046173/ Its interesting to see so many actors I recognize in the list, don’t know if that’s a good thing or if they all just happen to need a paycheck is another thing. Will Joseph Gordon-Levitt (from 3rd Rock From The Sun) be able to pull off Cobra Commander? Will we see much screen time of who plays Cover Girl (see the list…lol)? Its interesting to see the full list and then notice how many of them are listed as “uncredited” like this surprise, Brendan Fraser..!? I’ll keep an open mind on this one until I see it.

Yeah, I heard that the director (Stephen Sommers -
The Mummy 1 and 2) asked Brendan Fraser to make a cameo in the movie but I'm pretty sure it's only a bit part. Also, Zartan is played by Arnold Vosloo who played the Mummy.
I have a feeling I'll probably go see this movie just for some brainless summer action movie fun. Oh and Sienna Miller as Baroness.

OK, so I'm getting dragged to see this on Sunday with some of my geek friends. I've never seen a GI Joe cartoon, and the only GI Joe I had as a kid wore a WWII uniform.

From what I've seen, the movie is going to bear little resemblance to the cartoon and comics we (those of us who are 80s kids) grew up with. You're probably better off not having any preconceptions; it won't have as far to fall for you.
The short gist, though, is that "G.I. Joe" is the codename for a special ops force; in the original cartoon and comics, this was a U.S. operation, but from prior information, it sounds like the movie is making them an international organization. (Which is how it was for "Action Force", the U.K. equivalent of G.I. Joe.) Cobra is an international terror organization. This is probably most of what you need to know.

Thanks CO. My brain is already nitpicking this apart. Why would an International force consent to being called "GI Joe"? A trifle insulting to the non-Americans, aint it? lol.
It's going to be a long 2 hours. I'm really trying to talk them into seeing Hurt Locker instead.

Yeah... I
want to like it, but I don't honestly expect I will. (Whenever I get around to seeing it; movie money's kind of scarce right now.) I strongly suspect it's going to be one of those cases where
if it's enjoyable, it's only if you completely disengage your brain and just go for the spectacle. In your case, I advise heavy drinking.

Except I don't drink...
I did grow up watching the G.I. Joe cartoons and I even recite the opening theme song on occasion. I wanted to see this a while back but the more I see of the movie (commercials, trailers, interviews) the worse it looks to me.
My problems mostly center around those damn "accelerator suits". I guess in order for the movie to be a big blockbuster, they believe that the Joes need to be super human and the suits are their way of giving them super powers. Well, every time it shows them using the suits, the CGI is so bad, it makes them all look like Spider-Man.
But from what I've heard, the movie looks to be wall to wall action pieces so as CO said, if you turn your brain off, sit back and go along for the ride, you might enjoy it.
KilljoyBob
Aug 6 2009, 08:31 AM
I'm with you, Twinky. Those accelerator suits look really horrible in motion. And G.I. Joe never needed any super-powered suits to defeat Cobra. Although they did fly around on jet-packs and all their weapons shot lasers. And Cobra did have a flying base shaped like a giant cobra head and legions of B.A.T. robots. So goofy pseudo-scientific weapons and equipment isn't totally foreign to the world of G.I. Joe.
Definitely a "turn my brain off" kind of movie.

Aug 6 2009, 08:36 AM
And I just read on IMDB that
Jonathan Pryce is playing the US President in G.I. Joe. That guy has to be the most British person alive!
Erik
Aug 6 2009, 11:01 AM
I'm thinking those accelerator suits will only be seen during the Paris sequence since that seems to be the only time and place they show up in the previews. My guess would be that you'll see them in sometime in the first half of the movie going by what I saw last night on The Tonight Show and the preview they had with Sienna Miller as guest.
