This just in: G.I. Joe is now going to be
an international organization with a tremendously clumsy backronym.Hey, Hollywood. If you think you can't market a movie based on American forces... don't try to pass it off as something else.

Also, while I can kind of understand their reasoning behind this, I didn't hear any news about international audiences not liking the U.S. military guys in Transformers (who were supposedly based on G.I. Joe from when they teamed up with the Transformers in the old Marvel comics).

Characters, attitude and tone are pretty important when dealing with a classic property, but so is plot... and more to the point, if you're going to take the position that characters, attitude, and tone are more important than plot, taking a property whose tone is A REAL AMERICAN HERO and making it an international organization is going wrong from the first step.

Yeah... International Joes... I can't say I've had that much exposure to the Joes (except for that infamous Transformers crossover), but this isn't just a slap in the face, it's a slap in the face with a wet penis.

Marlon Wayans cast as leader

I don't know... the closest to an action movie that Damon Wayans has been in, as far as I can tell, is Bulletproof, and that was still mostly a comedy. Still, at least Damon is capable of acting a little.

IESB.net has an exclusive interview with Transformers and G.I. Joe producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
They talk about everything from why they went with Marlon Wayans, the decision to cast Ray Park as Snake Eyes (awesome!), other characters who might appear in the movie and what the future holds for a Transformers sequel. There's a lot in there.
BTW, I never read the comics but Snake Eyes was always one of my favorites and I was curious to know if he ever shows his face? Going by the cartoon, I just always assumed he was hidden under the mask and I liked it that way.

They say "knowing is half the battle."Here's
the page that's linked to in the above article.Channing Tatum (Duke) said that he was opposed to doing the film because he thought it was going to be too similar to his current war film coming out called "Stop-Loss" (set in the Iraq war). But he goes on to say that G.I. Joe isn't a war film, it's X-Men meets MI:III. He says it's absolutely not realistic.
Dennis Quaid (Hawk) says that it's going to be a big huge popcorn movie with a bit of the cartoon involved.
The english speaking Sienna Miller told Access Hollywood that she's required to do a lot of physical training to play the Baroness. She'll be wearing a black wig, leather and be using guns.
KilljoyBob
Mar 26 2008, 06:31 PM
That first article is a little wrong, Destro's metal mask was explained (not sure where, probably in the comics): his ancestor was caught selling weapons to both sides during the English Civil War. The two sides wanted to punish him, but didn't want to execute him because they still wanted his weapons, so they made him wear a metal mask. Destro's clan turned the mask into a symbol of family pride.
