After the Battle of the Albums, Chaomancer Omega took some time off from running music-related Battles to determine how best to approach it. He decided to run sixteen smaller battles, broken up by genre and category, and then to eventually take the top 4 entries of each of those battles for a Grand Battle of Songs.

The nominations for all 16 categories were taken at once, which was difficult for many nominators, but ensured that those who cared enough made for balanced entries. Or at least, this was the view of Chaomancer Omega at the time, though it may have led to lower participation levels in the long run (or this may have been caused by genre fatigue.)
