One of the miniseries leading up to Infinite Crisis, Day of Vengeance focused on the attempts of the Shadowpact to stop the rampage of the Spectre, who, seduced and deceived by the new Eclipso, Jean Loring, was seeking to destroy all magic. The miniseries resulted in the destruction of the Rock of Eternity and the death of Shazam, events which would lead into the changes made by Judd Winick's miniseries The Trials of Shazam!.
