Hal Jordan

Considered by many to be the greatest of all Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan was the star of the series from the beginning of the Silver Age until the mid-90s, when sales slumps led to a new creative direction. This direction had Hal Jordan going mad and destroying the Green Lantern Corps, and the last power ring going to Kyle Rayner. Meanwhile, Hal Jordan became the villain Parallax, threatening the entire universe in the miniseries event Zero Hour, before he was eventually stopped.

As Parallax, Hal Jordan died saving the world in a last heroic moment by re-igniting the sun when it was starting to fail. His soul in turmoil over his deeds, he became the new host of the Spectre until he began to lose control of both it and the Parallax personality, which was revealed in Green Lantern: Rebirth to be a separate being long imprisoned by the Guardians of the Universe, which had gained access to Hal's mind through the Central Power Battery that fueled his power ring. Freed from the infection with the help of Kyle Rayner, Hal Jordan was restored to life, and serves once more as a Green Lantern and a member of the Justice League of America.
