This special, negative McCrea Award was handed out in 2004 to the comic-book writer who was deemed to have been both atrociously bad at writing, and yet inexplicably kept getting business. In 2004, this was Chuck Austen, and he was given the award by moderator decision.

The award was not given out in 2005, as at that time there had been plans to create a summer-time awards show titled the Lou Awards, which would focus on negative aspects of entertainment, becoming the Razzies to the McCrea Awards's Oscars. These plans did not come to fruition in 2006, however. Discussion between Chaomancer Omega and Slovman has indicated, however, that the award, had it been given, would probably have gone to Judd Winick. Whether the award will make a reappearance in future McCrea Awards or if the Lou Awards will come into their own is yet to be determined.

The full title of the award, as given by Chaomancer Omega in the 2004 ceremony, is the Fredric Wertham Lifetime Achievement Award for Illiterate Writing.
