Featuring Superman growing up in his hometown, the basic theme of Smallville is heroics without "flights and tights". Clark gradually acquires his powers over time, all the while encountering new threats from supervillains and kryptonite, and occasionally meeting young versions of his future Justice League of America allies.

Smallville was the 2004 winner of the Best TV Show McCrea Award.
