The Dark Knight Returns

The Dark Knight Returns is a pivotal graphic novel by Frank Miller. In this tale set in an alternate future of the DC Universe, Batman, who has been retired for some time, comes out of retirement to once again clean up Gotham City. The reactions of the criminals, citizens, government, and other superheroes to his return forms the premise of the book. The book was an exceptionally dark take on the character, and its tone was imitated by many followers throughout the late 80s and the 90s. As such, it is both loved and hated by comics fans, with some on the Halls in either camp. Despite this, it still made it to the semi-finals of the Battle of the Comic Book Storylines.
