The Far Side

The Far Side, by Gary Larson, was a gag-panel comic strip that ran from 1980 to 1995. While not the first gag-panel comic, it is generally considered the best, and has been a major inspiration for gag-panel comics that have followed it. The Far Side was a semi-finalist in the Battle of the Comic Strips, getting shutout by eventual winner Calvin and Hobbes.
